I've been using their products for years and generally think they make good stuff. One thing about this company however, is it usually takes a while after a product's release for all of the bugs to be ironed out. I usually wait for a while before buying any new hardware they release. With that said, I buy a lot of their products! This looks interesting but I think I'll use my current home NAS solution while some of the issues you mentioned get resolved. Thanks for the good review!launch

As much as I'd like to add this to my home rack, and despite my desire to not use synology anymore due to their recent changes, the sync features synology has that allow me to specify folders to sync between the NAS and my devices, including my android phone and table, are central to my workflow. I'm also using several other synolgy apps including docker though those could be offloaded to other machines. Like you said, this is more of a backup endpoint than a homelab NAS. Hopefully that will change down the road with software updates, but not holding my breath.launch

I really wanted to use as a replacement for Synology. Since there are ZERO apps/services That is a no go. Then I wanted to use it as a JBOD and backup my Synology 1619+ to the UNAS but that is a no go too. The software needs lots of work before it can be a comparison to Synology.launch

Wait I’m a bit confused at 4:55. Is it true that 1- You can’t limit the size of your Time Machine backups, and 2- Each Mac has to be assigned to a specific drive? I have like 5 different Macs at home, I’m not going to designate 5 massive server drives just for Time Machine backups. \nThis can’t be right. Even QNAP allows you to limit the size of backups and deletes old backups as the space fills up. Anyone else have experience with this?launch

Time Machine use on my UNas is janky. I can't figure out how to use Time Machine without having to map it to my \"Personal-Drive.\" That doesn't work because I don't want to give my \"Personal-Drive\" a Storage Limit. I can't see a shared drive or use a created TimeMachine users' \"Personal-Drive\" unless I Unmount my original Shared Drive.\n\nSigh... Time Machine on my Synology is very easy. Do you have any UNas/Time Machine tips and tricks? Am I missing some UniFi shortcut?launch

I have a UNAS Pro and it was a great solution for me. Don't know if it was mentioned here, but the UNAS Pro doesn't currently support more than one storage pool -- meaning, you couldn't, for example, create a RAID 5/5E or RAID 6 with 5 disks and another RAID 1 with 2 disks. A deal-breaker for some, not a big deal for me.launch

I bought one a few months ago in the hopes that my freelance work started picking up more. Having used a few other NAS OSes in the past I can say that the UI is spectacular but missing some features that may or may not be important to some. Personally I would love to have multiple different storage pools, so that I can mix SSDs and HDDs in one enclosure, set the SSDs to be the hot storage and the HDDs to be larger bulk storage - sadly that's not currently an option (hopefully in the future though, with a software update!)\nI will say though, even with HDDs it's blazing fast - way faster than QNAP alternatives I've tried! Presumably this is because it strips away all the apps and services that are mostly unnecessary for small businesses who just need networked storage. Best value NAS I've ever tried and truly great performance - it's just missing a few software features!launch

I'd be very wary of buying a UNAS PRO at the moment. I purchased one, added four Seagate IronWolf 4TB, NAS drives to it, and it was fine. I also had two external Seagate hard drives I'd purchasing recently containing Barracuda drives. I took these out their enclosurers and added them to the NAS. Both failed almost immediately saying the drives were faulty with I/O errors. Prior to removing the drives from the enclosures I'd checked and there were no faults. The compatibility chart from UI gave no indication these drives were incompatible with the UNAS. UI's support was less than helpful, basically saying that i should just buy some other drives. So unless you are buying drives from the UI store it sounds like there's no real guarantee that the drives will work, and no support from UI to determine why the drives are incompatible. I purchased the UNAS because I was worried about Synology's plans to restrict the drives they support. But the UI approach seems even worse. The final straw was when the support person seriously suggested I purchase a third Barracuda drive to see if that worked! So buyer beware, at least until UI get their act together.launch

Something not mentioned and Unifi has confirmed is you do not know which drive is a main and which is a mirror. We typically setup our servers and NAS with drivers from different lots, to avoid simultaneous failures if there is a bad batch of drives, as this once happened before, both the main and mirror failed simultaneously which defeated the point of a mirror drive. I was shocked to find out there is no way to tell this, to me this is a huge negative for the UNAS Pro.launch

my biggest complaint is you have to use all the same sized drives. I would like something like Drobo had or Synology where I can add different sized drives and it uses the space and adds it to make it look like one large drive, and update drives as I can afford them.launch
