Thermal performance under heavy load is a real weak spot. One owner reported the RS422+ overheating for two full days straight after a large photo and video transfer, with the CPU pegged at 100% during indexing and thumbnail generation. Temperatures reportedly reached 95°C before throttling kicked in. Replacing the stock thermal paste with a higher-quality compound reportedly dropped temperatures to about 85°C and also lowered idle temperatures, suggesting the factory application was a limiting factor.

The move to an AMD Ryzen CPU and limited stock RAM frustrate some buyers. A longtime Synology user expressed disappointment that newer NAS models were shifting to AMD CPUs, preferring to stick with Intel-based units like the DS718+ for Plex use. Separately, another commenter felt the included RAM was inadequate for modern needs and said they would rather buy a DS1821+ if RAM upgradability remained limited, while a third user hoped RAM could at least be expanded for database use.

Noise levels depend heavily on which hard drives are installed. Several commenters focused on acoustics: one asked about day-to-day noise for a bedroom rack setup, while another noted WD Red drives were significantly quieter than expected, possibly due to lower 5400rpm speeds. However, one user reported WD Red Plus drives making loud, seagull-like noises during active use. Questions also arose about adjustable fan noise profiles and whether WD drives, absent from the compatibility list, are fully supported.
