Hi dear friend Mark.\n\nI have an HX Stomp amp modeller and I want to buy the Canvas DI/LI Box. The HX Stomp by itself features BALANCED 1/4\" Outputs which can run either on Instrument or LINE Level. \nSo typically I don't need a DI Box with the HX Stomp. I just only need a TRS to XLR adapter and that's all.\nHowever, a) I need the Ground/Lift option that Canvas offers and b) the ability to run a secondary Output via the THRU Output and feed an active PA monitor at the same time, an FRFR perhaps, something to hear myself on stage. That's a game changer.\n\nThe HX Stomp as an amp modeller has low impedance outputs (680 Ohm). Typically I want to run in LI mode when using a Line Isolator.\nWhen you are in a live situation, the majority of the FOH desks have MIC level preamps. Ok? It is rare to find FOH desks with dedicated line level inputs.\nI have seen many Youtube videos (yours included), demonstrating a Line Isolator with amp modellers, in which when you run in LI mode to an audio interface or a FOH desk, the signal getsTOOOOOOO hot that you have to set the preamp gain at zero, \nhardly at 1 before it clips the signal. Just because in LINE mode the signal is just transformed from UNBALANCED to BALANCED and that's all. The gain stage remains the same. That hits hard a typical MIC preamp.\nWhen you clip the signal too ealry and you have to drop the preamp gain to zero without any headroom to move, that is not healthy at all.\n... And when you switch to DI mode, that is not adviced by the \"Output impedance\" of the amp modeller (The HX Stomp in this example).\n\nSo can you please explain me in simple words, how can that be possibly \"healthy\" for the signal for both situations?launch

Balanced does not = microphone level. You are mixing things up a bit. XLR also doesn't mean microphone level. XLR is just a connection type and can carry mic level, line level, AES, DMX, power, and more! Balanced audio is simply a normal phase signal, inverted phase signal, and a ground. \n\nEven if a guitar device has balanced outputs, anyone playing live can and should use a DI for 2 things. First, it protects against phantom power from the FOH console or the digital snake. I don't think all balanced outputs on all devices will be happy to have 48v shoved in on one of the pins. The transformer in the DI electrically isolates the connection making it impossible for phantom power to make it to a device. \n\nSecond, running a line level balanced output to FOH via a snake can introduce cross talk to the other mic level wires in the snake. Crosstalk is when the signal from one source bleeds into other sources via induction. Also sending your FOH engineer line level can be too much level for the mic pre. Most FOH consoles are expecting mic level (-60 to -40 dBu) not line level (-10 to +4 dBu or even more). My Headrush pedal can output a signal as high as +18 dBu. This is perfectly fine for an audio interface's line level input. My MOTU line level inputs can accept up to +18 dBu, but almost any mixer's mic pre cannot. It will overload the pre and the converter and the FOH engineer will likely engage a pad to drop it back down by 20dB. \n\nThe result is that you send a super hot signal to FOH, possibly/probably causing crosstalk in the other lines, for no observable difference to dynamic range or noise level. Compare that to plugging your line level output into a DI, which will drop the signal down to mic level. Now there is not crosstalk, no pad engaged, and the FOH engineer has one less thing to do. Will they have to put some preamp gain on your guitar? Yes. But you can optimize that by sending a lot of level into the DI, as long as you don't overload the transformer. Plus, 15-20 dB of preamp gain is not anything to worry about in terms of noise. \n\nThe main benefit of the Canvas, I just ordered one a few days ago, is that you get both a DI and a Line Isolator in one box. For playing at home, I can switch to LI and have little to no signal drop going into my line level balanced inputs on my MOTU M4. For live, I can engage the DI switch and now everyone is happy. I'm protected against phantom and the FOH engineer has a signal similar to a higher output microphone. \n\nAre there better transformers in more expensive DIs? Probably. The Cinemag transformers look exceptional. You can check out the spec sheet for frequency and distortion information. They are very low distortion and have very good frequency response. How good is the Canvas in comparison? Probably not as good because the devices that use Cinemag transformers cost far more for a single channel. I contemplated making my own DI with Cinemag transformers, because it isn't hard at all, but the Canvas seems to be a good compromise of convenience and quality.launch

Why I’m getting this: I go out stereo from an ACS-1 into a DI to FOH. Line Iso mode will get me there without the tone suck of a traditional DI. Then, I can use the through, summed to mono, to go to a stage monitor if needed (like my headrush), but not loose my stereo chorus (due to sum/phasing issues…I don’t mean that it’s still stereo) or ping pong delays (due to loosing one side of the stereo image). So, I can stay in stereo in house with no signal loss, but monitor through an amp mono if needed.launch

Ive got one, but I also get confused with all the knobs, this video gives me clarity rso thanks for that, the pedal definitely helps to avoid added and unwanted noises, and definitely gives your signal a boost, and overall I feel it sounds better. My guitarist and I both use the Dream Amp Cab Simulators for live shows where the stage is somewhat not huge. he doesn't have a canvas and I have the canvas mono, (secretly I feel my sound is better than his) :-) Canvas is the way to go!launch

I've got a Fender Engine Room and two Ernie Ball Volts which plug into the Fender to expand it. All 3 fit nicely under my board and power up to 16 pedals. It ended up costing a lot for all 3, and probably less than just the Canvas would have. They work great for me.\n\nHowever, if I needed to replace them, the Canvas would be more compact and practical. And the kicker is that everything I've ever gotten from Walrus has been absolutely top quality, so I wouldn't hesitate to get their products again.\n\nLastly, I love that they make utility tools for musicians. It's great to have an option that's made in the USA (domestic to me) and that you know has been made with an attention to detail and quality. Do I sound like a Walrus fanboy? guilty.launch

This pedal works great for my open mic nights! I sit down, pull out my small pedal board (Boss RC-3, HX Stomp, Canvas rehearsal), hook up and roll! \n\nI Bluetooth to the rehearsal and use YouTube backing tracks/Moises app rhythms I made, etc. I loop my guitar over the backing tracks etc and jam away. \n\nBlows people’s minds and it’s fun to build the loops live with backing tracks etc.\n\nWay easy to set up, easy to use. Plug in, play for my 15 minutes or so, unplug the board and move on.launch
