hello! i would like to know if the ds1019 is worth buying in 2020/2021? or is there another NAS out now or coming soon with better specs (more transcodes) for that price?\ni want a nas just for plex and it needs to transcode HEVC/x265 1080p 8bit videos. the more it can transcode, the better..\ni would love to see video where you compare or show the best NAS options for plex 2020/2021 :-Dlaunch

As a synology user, the answer is NO. IMO to be a plex powerhouse you need to have the power to encode at a reasonable level and the synology nas does not have that unless you are buying to top tier (7k+) which actually has a server CPU inside. It will work as a plex library for videos that you have ALREADY encoded to the format that all of your streaming devices use. So basically this can only handle the storage and serving up of files via the plex interface if the files are already in the correct format. I believe there doesn't even have to be transcoding if both devices decide they have and can handle the format it will just send it.\n\nThis is the downfall of synology as a whole. They DO NOT give you the power that they should to support their TOP TIER software. If I could get a synology nas with a ryzen 8 core I would buy it instantly. They started to make up for it with these smaller NAS by putting in a encoding chip but then don't offer it in the larger more expensive options. Why? WHO KNOWS. Probably for the same terrible reason that they didn't put any 10g ports on the 19+ model when they were on the 17 (base mode) of the same NAS level product....launch

Like your video a lot. What I'd be interested in the future would be THE movie (I.e. the best movie of all times ;) ) at full bitrate transcoded down to 2/5/8 mbps. And then the same test with image-based subtitles enabled. That would give a lot more information about the capabilities and limitations of a device. E.g. I have the DS1019+ and it can't transcode a single 1080p H.264 steam, when image-based subtitles are enabled.launch

Hey Jason, just wondering if you were able to verify if this unit supports HW transcoding of HEVC/H265 files? Plex's documentation says Skylake or newer, but Atom-based CPUs aren't specifically listed. Through my own tests I am able to verify my Synology 416play (Braswell CPU) can HW decode H264 streams using Plex but not H265. Awesome content, thx again!launch

Nope, Synology keeps messing up - 4 drives, no 10Gbe. Other device i was planning to buy 1618+ - 10gbe pcie, but no transcoding. FFS. \n\nGet it together Synology. the thing i hate about synology is that there is NO way to upgrade this crap to 10GBe nerwork speeds ... allmost all Qnap nas can do this .... and thats why Qnap is the best for somone that wants a plex server that have alot of contentlaunch

And a big hello to you, You know everyone always says to comment below because they like to interact with the public but when you do, well the public gets no answer. I hope you are different. because of you and a few others, i went an purchased this Disk Station then called myself following instructions to the letter during the setup portion. One thing i found out is that no matter how good an instructor is, at some point during the setup he or she will miss something. That is why i am sending this. It's almost been a year now and i have many pictures, music and movies. On my phone or tablet and in my car, i have the Plex app and am able to get into the system and enjoy media to my hearts content. As of today looking at the system health icon i see Uptime: 73 days 23:43:21/ Health : Good. Now when i look below at storage, i see something that makes me wonder if this station is set up right. This is what i see. Storage/Volume 1 (Normal) Used capacity: 2.35TB Available capacity: 2.01TB - Icon shows 54% and underneath i see Volume 2 (Normal) Used Capacity: 17 MB/Available capacity\n891.82 GE - Icon shows 1%/ Next Volume 3 (Normal) Used Capacity: 287.6 MB Available capacity: 891.95 - Now on the desktop i see Storage manager and when i click on it opens\nStorage manager Healthy/ All Storage Pools Volume Status - Volume One(Normal) SHR/ Volume 2 (Normal) Airwolf 2, storage pool 2, 17MB/891.8GB - (icon shows) 0%. \nVolume 3 (Normal) Airwolf 4 Storage pool 287.6MB/892.2GB\nNow under all this is, Storage Pool ID - Raid Type - Total Capacity\nStorage Pool 1 (Normal) Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) (With Data Protection for 1-drive fault\ntolerance) 4.5TB (Next) Storage Pool 2 (Normal) Basic (Without Data Protection) 1.8TB - (Under This) Drive Information Used Drives 4(Now when i click on Volume) Volume 1 is half colored in. So I have a DS1019+ and I added a 6TB ironwolf pro and I set it up as Basic than I just got a second HD also 6TB but the I went to convert it to a Raid 0 it’s said that I can only go to Raid 1 or 5 then I decided to do SHR so I got the second HD and I did SHR but now I don’t know how to transfer all of my files from the first HD to the second so I can reset the first one and make it SHR! I looked everywhere and there’s no video talking about this!!! Please advise. Also do I have to change the setting from Plex and Drive? Thank you.launch

These reviews are good but they leave out one very important fact. How do you recover from a drive fault? I got an error\n\n\nInternal storage\n07/20/2019 10:00\nSSD cache1 1 on DS1019 has crashed.\n\n\nI wish I could post a picture. As a computer geek myself I captured info that tech support might need.\n\nI had two 1TB very fast SSDs running in raid mode.\nApparently the SSD are part of the volume. The volume was corrupted. I tried removing the SSDs. The volume was still corrupted.\nI had ordered another 2 SSDs. The pair cost about $450. \nMeanwhile I checked the original SSDs. My Win10 computer said the originals were good. I just spent $450 for nothing.\nI put the original SSDs back in the DS1019+ but the volume was still corrupted. \nI was furious! The data on the DS1019+ was lost. Never trust a NAS!\nThat is why I had bought the DS1019+ as a back up for my Drobo5N. Fortunately I could copy the data from the Drobo5n back to the DS1019+ after I went through the configuration procedure in this video. \nThere is no excuse for what happened. I don't trust my DS1019+. I mostly have it off except when I want to synchronize between the Drobo5N and the DS1019+. The last time I tried to shut the DS1019+ down it wouldn't shut down. I had push the on button and hold it to get the DS1019+ to shut down.\n\nMy Drobo5N is old and slow. The software and documentation is poor if it exists at all but it is reliable. I lost a drive once. I replaced it and it rebuilt the drive no problem. The Drobo5n worked as it should. I trust my Drobo to be old and slow but reliable. Reliable is the most important part. I can't say that about the DS1019+.\n\nBTW, I own a computer company. I am aware of very expensive NAS systems with redundant power supplies and CPUs. These are very expensive.launch

I can't believe Synology is still using that shitty power connector which is trivial to knock or pull out. Really they need to update that to something more robust.... Yeah, I know they give you a little plastic thing to attempt to hold it fast, but that is just a crappy hack - just fix the connector already.launch

I have an old DS218 and it still works great. I thought about upgrading but Synology has nothing for media horders. No USB C or Thunderbolt for quick offload or upload and no HDMI output. I ended up using my 2018 Mac mini as my media server while my old Synology backs up in the distance.launch

I wish these weren't so expensive. I don't think these are made though to provide NAS storage to the common man, but to semi-pros and those with enough cash. \n\nIt would also be cool if it were more modular, for example, buying the compute/networking part then buy drive modules as you need them. Although looking at the expansion link, it looks like you'd be paying a high premium for those too.launch
