Navigation and screen quality got mixed but largely positive marks. Multiple divers found the D5 easier to navigate than the D6i and appreciated the color display's action-cam-like feel underwater, even if it seemed dim on land or next to a Shearwater Teric at first glance. Once submerged, several reviewers said visibility was actually very good in any sunlight condition. Still, some found screen brightness disappointing compared to promotional material and competitor displays.

The single biggest complaint is the inability to view no-deco time and tank pressure together. Numerous divers explicitly called out that unlike the D4i or D6i, the D5 forces you to scroll between decotime, tank pressure, and gas time instead of showing them on one screen. This was called annoying enough to prevent a repeat purchase or recommendation, and questioned as dangerous since divers must keep pressing buttons mid-dive to check critical safety data instead of glancing at a fixed display.

Rechargeable battery and scratch-prone black coating are recurring durability concerns. Long-time Suunto users lament trading a multi-year battery for one needing charges every few days, with battery life ranging from about a week in watch mode to needing power stations on multi-dive trips. The black-coated version scratches very easily, sometimes within the first dive, prompting some buyers to recommend the steel version instead or add protective covers.
