The PA200, PA400 and this are all very similar. Firstly, they should, despite the volume knob, be regarded as no frills power amps. Its a very Chinese thing, putting volume knobs on power amps, and its really not useful. They are absolutely not integrated amplifiers in any real sense of the word.\n\nSecondly, there are real issues round reliability. I had two PA200s and a PA400, and one of the PA200s and the PA400 failed in exactly the same way within 6 months.\n\nHowever, despite all that, when used as power amps (preferably in mono configuration) they can sound very good for the price. In my case I used an Aiyima T20 tube preamp with great results. My PA200 was repaired and the new one is fine. A good preamp brings the character missing from the GaN amp.\n\nI see no benefit in spending extra for the VMV versions.\nI do think they provide oodles of power in a small form factor, and are a clear step up in SQ from things like the V3 monos.launch

Its pretty frustrating to watch SMSL constantly improve on their amplifiers but always fall short on I/O and features. SMSL really need to give amps like this 2-3 analog inputs and make them a real integrated amplifier to be useful. Either that or just make it a true power amp and make a matching pre-amp you can stack with it. I also find it weird the A1 Pro gets the VMV treatment when the PA-X seems like its better more powerful amp.\n\nAlso, on the whole GaN thing the SMSL PA200 is also GaN based and has identical power and features and is far cheaper than the A1 Pro, it would be interesting to see if they sound the same. Regarding power density SMSL has had class D amps based on Infineon modules (these new GaN SMSLs also use Infineon) that push identical 85 / 160 into 8 and 4 ohm loads like the AL200, RAW-HA1 for awhile now so power density wise its nothing new.launch

The A1 pro is actually half a PA-X. That's why it only has 1 XLR. To be fair the comparison should be 2 A1 pros in mono against 1 PA-X.\nOn both the lack of 12V triggers annoys me. \n\nI don't think either one is a good compromise for me, I better just keep saving for the Laiv GaNM mono's to complete the Laiv set. \n\nAnd meanwhile I'm very satisfied with the Fosi ZA3's with SX22B opamps (or SX35B's). \n\nAs always, great review. 👍🏻\n🇱🇺👋🏻launch

Why have an XLR out on the DAC and no XLR in on the matching amp? And those spikes/feet.....seems like they could have thought that through a little bit better. Couple that with the \"suspect\" heat dissipation.....This almost seems like a solution to a problem that never existed. In my opinion, these are serious design flaws. I'm going to pass. Hi... I've been watching your reviews for a while... I'm watching also a other chanels about hifi... The Audiophiliac and a few other natural supects... I have to admit that your have quite improved your formula... I'm impressed by the quality of most of your reviews although I'm not familiar with all of your references... As for the SMSL A1, I'm not surprised that it's, in reality, a class A/B... it's power consumption is a mere 30 watts (0,5 watt @ idle), which is WAY less then normal class A... I believe the 10 watts amplifier by First Watt consume 170 watts !launch

Hi Tarun - your question regarding whether this amplifier truly operates in Class A is a good one. As a user of a First Watt M2x Class A power amplifier, I know hot these devices can run. I've always thought a large amount of heatsinking was a necessary part of this design. I'm very curious as to how they can have gotten round this requirement. Or, perhaps they haven't? While I agree that ultimately it doesn't really matter that much, I'd still be curious as to what's really happening. Thanks again for what you do.launch

Being a Class A amp builder myself and knowing the limitations of the laws of physics in thermodynamics. As soon as you say it’s CLASS A and at that size and weight for the power output . Anybody familiar with a high bias of a true CLASS A the size and surface Area needed to cool it off immediately knows that chassis size combination is not possible to drive the heat dissipation needed and survive. \n So they’re basically kind of pushing the limits and playing with the wordage in meaning of CLASS A. \n\n Truly believe with the way they have it set up it has its clarity and good points with low distortion so they could get those ultra low numbers that are good for sales for the numbers People. \n\n But when you spent years building Class A amplifier you immediately know this is not a TRUE Class A amplifier.launch

Class A amplifiers are typically around 10-20% efficient. That is, if you put in 100W of electricity, you get 10-20W of audio power out. The rest is lost to heat. The SMSL VMV A1 amp claims 15W into 4 ohms, with a 30W power draw. Wow, that's 100% efficient, even beating out the best class D amps by a mile. So one of these claims is suspicious. If I were to guess, I would say this amp is class AB with the first few watts in class A, and the remainder being class B (this is how all AB amps work). Compare to the Schiit Aegir which also claims to be class A \"with over 10W of Class A standing bias\". Given that its total output power is 40W, the remaining power above 10W is most likely class B for a class AB amp overall. Total power draw of the Aegir: \"450W max\".launch

Great little amp, inoffensive, no upper midrange excess. For my taste it lacks treble extension and a bit of the depth that tubes give. The recommendation to use the volume range from 66 to 68 with a preamp is inexplicable to me. The function of the preamplifier is to improve the signal and if it does not amplify it cannot fulfill its function. Using a Topping pre90 preamp the sound is very clean within this range but the midbass suffers and there is no midrange bloom at all. In my experience the amp works best between 35 and 55. Let's not forget the concept of riding the gain.launch

Mine distorts heavily after 60 on the volume, granted I was testing with low efficiency speakers just to see what I could still get out of it. I listen loud so even with high efficiency speakers it isn't enough. But either way for what this cost it should be clean to the top and its unusable beyond 55 - 60 on the volume, so it has even less usable power than advertised.launch

I found it pointless. Overpriced, doesn't perform HUNDREDS of dollars better than the other little class D amps out there. Has less power and starts distorting when the volume gets over 60 and at max volume 70 its completely unacceptable. I expected more of a sound signature being hybrid class A but for me it wasn't there. Going back and forth between this and my SMSL SA300, I no doubt prefer the SA300 with SMDB filter. More powerful and sounds better.... to me. This A1 was made to make some money off the Class A guys that won't touch all the Class D gear SMSL makes. Also weird SMSL is marketing so heavily specs on a Class A, typically Class A and Tube gear is completely subjective and specs don't matter. Because for these guys good specs doesn't necessarily mean good sound....launch

These Gallium Nitride amps sound great, but a word of caution. I have had an SMSL PA400 and PA200 fail on me in the same way. Power to the unit but no sound output. The PA200 was a \"chip\" failure, but no idea which chip. The PA400 I just got a refund.\n\nI dont want to put people off these amps, but suggest purchasing from somewhere who make returns or repair easy.\n\nI purchased from Hifigo and Aoshida Audio, both of whom were excellent with customer service, but it did mean sending the units back to China, though postage was refunded.launch

I was wondering if it worths to purchase a new one, or maybe there is an amp from another brand, with similar voicing, that does not surpasse 2 times the price of the A1.launch

Sadly my A1 died after 7 months of light use. When that happened I had it working with a tube preamp and Buchardts S400mk2, and I was enjoying more of this combo, than my Doge 10 integrated. As the shipping to china for repairing is almost the cost of the amp new, I was wondering if it worths to purchase a new one. Looking in forums like this one, It seems like most A1 are doing well.\n\nI would like to know too where else can I look for an amp with similar voicing, that does not surpasse 2 times the price of the A1 (Schiit has the Aegir, but by some review it seems it has a bright/lean sound). Trusting Topping, SMSL and FiiO lately is a tough ask. Trusting them with something that can blow your speakers is a bridge too far. I need to see these companies reverse course and develop their products fully and properly before release. \n\nA half baked streaming DAC sucks but an amp with speaker killing POPS or anything like that is not something I think these companies have earned me taking a chance with. I ordered a pair from Amazon as they have a 4 week return policy if you don't like them. I have bi-amp them with a pair of Emotiva XC1 speakers in vertical mode. The amp produces plenty of power, and sounds fine. If you power them on and off with the back switch they will thump and pop your speakers, (Not Good). For a pair of amps, costing less than $1K, I find them pricey. I was previously running a pair of ZA3 amps with upgraded Op-Amps. With my ears the sound improvement just did not justify the cost. Yes, the base was stronger and the high frequency takes a good 40 hrs of break in time to get rid of the shrill, but it became a no go for me. I've decided to stick with my ZA3 and keep the saving. If they have a price drop that may change this equation.launch

My first introduction to the new wave of affordable hifi was the SMSL AO300. I was very impressed -- not just with the functionality, design, and value proposition, but with the sound as well. Then I got a pair of Fosi Audio ZA3's in bridged mono (by the way, for the same money), and the upgrade was so total that I found myself wondering how the two companies can even be in the same market space. Since then I've heard several other products by SMSL and they all have the same quality. Maybe it's their house sound, but the presentation is always thin and uninteresting to me. I recently tried the A1 and I agree the tonality was very nice, but wow, the dynamics were in the toilet :( This was paired with a very dynamic holo cyan 2 and with \"girl and guitar\" tracks, sure, it was great. With anything lively or complex, it was like sinking the spry feet of the dac in cement. And no, I wasn't abusing the unit - I have 8ohm/90db speakers, my room is small, I listen at low to moderate volume. The amp wasn't struggling at base, it just didn't have any life in it. I just watched your A2 review and found it interesting the even with significantly higher wattage, the same problem seems to exist.launch

Thank You for this review. I'm using this one with the RME ADI-2 DAC and old cabasse bookshelves for my computer audio, and like it a lot, mostly for resolution and clarity without being bright. However I wish it had one more audio input and am puzzled by the fact that the spikes have different length and the unit doesn't stay flat ?launch
