Multiple listeners describe the D300 as making instruments sound lifelike, with real timbre for violins, guitars, and trumpets, deep soundstage, and smooth, non-harsh highs compared to typical ESS/AKM DACs. Several owners call it their best DAC yet for musicality, dynamics, and midrange texture, especially with vocals and acoustic instruments, though a couple found complex or poor recordings could sound slightly flat or mixed up.

Build quality is consistently criticized despite the DAC's premium chip and price. Owners repeatedly note the thin sheet-metal casing feels flimsy and cheap next to models like the DO200, attributing this to SMSL cutting costs elsewhere to offset the expensive ROHM chip. One user added internal damping to stop rattling, another swapped op-amps for better sound. Several say the exterior doesn't affect the sound quality, which they still rate highly despite chassis complaints.
