GH3 = the best mirrorless interchangeable lens camera available for under $300. Simple as that. Also: built -in WiFi works with Panasonic Image App, built-in headphone jack, microphone input jack, hard-wire remote control, old style PC studio flash socket, PictBridge capable, shoots stills at 20 FPS using electronic shutter, built-in digital tele-converter, articulated LCD screen, battery grip with extra battery option, great battery life, ( WAY better than even some modern Sony's ), uses STANDARD SD cards, none of that \"XQD\" crap, clean HDMI output, UNLIMITED video record time. The GH3 isn't designed as a vdeo only camera and I imagine it would fall short in some respects of a dedicated machine in the handling. But given the price difference and the ability to take pretty much any lens because of the short mount to sensor distance and large number of adaptors, the future proofing is in place. \nGH3 sound is flexible plus you gave the option to record video to external HD...\nI'd give the GH3 serious consideration at the very least.launch

FYI, CONTRAST AF is the only option for video mode not Phase detection, which was rated poorly against GH3 and no its not faster the GH3. GH3 has All-I codec = more data for color correction, @ 72mbps. Max shutter speed is useless for video operation, GH3 has live view vs optical viewfinder, D7100 CAN'T change aperture nor ISO while recording. A simple adapter on GH3 will utilize all those 169 lenses. What's the point of \"larger APS-C\" if the video is soft and under bit-rated, yet still cropped?launch

I am surprised you pick the D7100 over GH3 in terms of video. The D7100 is a quirky, because Nikon omitted OLPF, it resulted in higher moire, still 60fps result in 1.3x crop factor, outdated H264 codec, can't change aperture while recording, have to stop, menu, change, out of menu, back to record. VIDEO MODE CONTRAST AF ONLY, scored poorly in DPReview compared to GH3, NO auto ISO in Manual mode, but auto ISO in P, A, S, if that makes sense. Lower bitrate, soft video image. So why 7100 over GH3?launch

Then got a gh3 as a C cam for weddings, got another GH4 cause it was so cheap, gave the GH3 to my sister and now I'm looking to get either a GH5s or maybe just a GX9 haha. I went into my local Wilkinson camera in Southport and fondled the GH3 for some time, the staff were excellent in letting me even though I said I wasnt in a position to buy today, the camera feels like a solid chunk of alloy, cool or cold metal and soft grip rubber really has a pro feel.Its just about as big as I would like to go, gone are my big camera days, infact I feel slightly embarrassed when I think about how I used to strut around with a 5D and 50/1.2 lens etc.. no thanks..launch

I am a stills photographer, that's my business. But working day in, day out with a camera, there is more to it than technical capability. Size and feel, the ergonomics of the thing are just as important.\nFor me the GH3, even if it had no video capability, would be a better camera than the OM-D. Why? The OM-D doesn't make me want to pick it up and use it, It's small and jewel like. Beautiful. The GH3 is just chunky and functional - as am I :-)\nBoth is the real answer. I haven't used the action tracking much yet. For my purposes it worked well with the GH2 and the GH3 should be better. Normal focusing with the two f2.8 zooms is notably fast so that ought to translate to good tracking.\nRe the controls, interface etc, the GH3 has brought it to a new level for M43, up to the best DSLR standards. The trade-off is size but, as you say, it's the lenses where the real M43 advantages lay.\nI might do a comparison of the GH2/3, so tracking would come into that.launch

It looks like this camera will address most of the issues I have with my EM-5. Better controls, better touch interface, better handling, better LCD articulation. David, thanks for your advice about the GH3.\nI sold my Nikon and my Lumix G3, I have just purchased the GH3 along with the 35-100 and 12-35 lens. (I have the GX1, 14mm, 45-200 and 100-300 lens) I am really pleased with its performance already and glad I made the change. One thing I found after the second time out with the GH3 was that I fired off 1190 shots and the battery was still showing full. I don't use the rear screen much. This was far in excess of the stated 550 shots. Thanks again.launch

I absolutely love the battery grip. I've had them before on other cameras and not liked them but the GH3 one feels really good for the camera balance and hold. In fact, I'd fit it if all it did was hold a spare the battery. Not cheap, though, as you say.\nMind you shouldn't have mentioned the Oly 45mm - I don't think any M34 outfit should be without that little jewel. Have you seen my review of it?launch

Since you have the battery grip, do you think it is worth it? I have big-ish hands(XL glove size) and while the GH3 grip doesn't feel too small, I know the battery grip will only make it better. I've been debating with myself for the past couple weeks on whether or not I should get the grip or just deal with rotating my hand with the shutter button and maybe put that $300 towards another lens like the Oly 45mm ƒ1.8.launch

I have been looking at 4/3 cameras for a long time because I have some good old Minolta MD lenses. I also bought an adaptor but I doubt that the camera is going to be able to do any autofocus with it. Does the GH3 have any special \"focus assist\" mode like the JVC camcorders have? This is the only way I think I am going to be able to get a good focus without watching the output on a high definition monitor.launch

I finally got myself one of these beasts last August to replace the G5 and the Oly epl5. I was planning on having this and keeping my epl5 primarily as a walkabout camera and because I really liked the JPEG out of it but sold it as the gh3 is as good if not better for… well everything. And with the pancake lenses (14mm &/or the 14-42 x lens) it is still small enough to put into my jacket pocket and light and unobtrusive enough to carry around in the hand.launch

It's the laws of optics that get in the way. Lenses to cover a 36x24mm sensor have to be much larger than lenses covering an m43 one, often by a factor of 2 or 3 times in weight and dimensions. There is no way round that. My GH3 with the two f2.8 zooms will fit into a tiny bag that weighs little. A DSLR with those two lenses equivalents will weigh much more, mainly due to the lenses. That's to simplify it but no, we'll never see M43 size with FF until someone can change the laws of optics!launch
