Great, thorough review of the R7. I've been a sucker for all-in-one devices for a long time. My first computer audio device was an RP-U100 and RP-200 digital receivers from the early 2000 era. I was certainly intrigued when I saw the release of the R7 by FiiO. It seems to be a very versatile audio device and checks all the boxes for connectivity. Too bad about the lag on the USB input though. While not a show-stopper for myself, I can see where it can be a serious concerns for others. I own a FiiO K9 Pro (AK4499) variant, and absolutely love the sound. I don't 'need' another DAC/streamer, as I build most of mine now, but the R7 is certainly a fitting companion for the summer home, office, or bedroom - especially if you use roon as your whole-home digital eco-system. I think it was me that requested the review of this and the Matrix 😆😆😆\n\nGreat review mate. I bought one (white) for my work desk. I never thought of using this for PC audio (as I use this as a Roon endpoint) But as I run some Logitech z623 speakers I run the 3.5mm and RCA's no issue. Also, the USB-C out you can attach a USB-C monitor for YouTube and the like. But I don't use it. \nI do at times use my Chord Mojo 2 with this. But end of the day this is just for work, and does the job well.\n\nI bought the R7 mainly so I didn't need my phone/tablet and use the touchscreen. \n\nLooking forward to the next review 👍👍👍launch

i love this machine as it was more the streamer side of things i was after. i have it hooked up to speakers and plan on hooking everything through it to turn it into a media hub. i completely underestimated this unit and thought it was just a good headphone streamer, but, having lived with it for around 2 weeks now i have started to have big plans for it. im really just starting to get in to proper audio and this gave me such a good jumping off point. it almost feels made for me.launch

3,6w is enought for those hard to drive hifiman planars 👍 Also you can run this on high gain, as measurments stay the same according to asr. I'm watching this vid with my R7 connected to audeze lcd-xc and hear no latency at all. but mine is newer, so this is prob solved in sw/fw. Also I ordered the remote and the physical fiio buttons that are available. they should be included ofc, as they are very cheap to buy. Turning on and off EQ does create a short wierd sound, but normally i dont change EQ that often. It IS however system wide. But it IS also pain to set via the fiio gui. I have set it to match harman curve for the lcd-xc. By the way i have installed youtube music, and you can run videos. You can even turn the box and gui orientation horizontal for bigger resolution for the vidoes.launch

When Hifiman rolled out the clearance sales this fall, I couldn't pass on the Arya Stealths for \"cheap\". So I grabbed the R7 to function as a hub for my PC audio setup, the Aryas sound nice with the R7 to my casual untrained ear, especially after I got the balanced cable for it. I still plan to get Schiit Vali3 on the side to try out how them tubes sound and for speakers I'm thinking Schiit Rekkr for an amp (since I'm already set on the Vali3 and I like my setup somewhat uniform visually) with Micca RB42 or MB42X G2 for compact speakers since it's a PC setup after all. I like the great number and variety of all the inputs and outputs the R7 has and since it's an android os, you can add all sorts of neat audio visualizers etc from the play store to flare up the experience. Loving it so far!\n\nMy experience in hifi prior to this is limited to investing in Hifiman Sundara x Topping DX3 Pro+ a year ago after visiting a local Hifi con but my current living situation doesn't support bassy speaker setup if I wanna upkeep the relations with the neighbors :)launch

I own both the FIIO R7 and a Geshelli Labs J2 DAC. In no way the J2 outperforms the R7. R7 really shines when connected to a decent DC PSU- that pushes the little box to a higher level- especially with the head-amp-section. As a DAC it outperforms an RME ADI2 DAC FS. As a streamer it is fantastic. I find it to be important to choose the right music player software- best of all with this device- at least to my ears- is the Usb Audio Player Pro App on Android- no competition for that- make the right configuration and nothing will be left to be desired! To me R7 presents the future of HiFi- less cables- how I hate them ;- ), less space needed, ultra short signal paths, all in one! Next step- a flagship design- let's call it Fiio untypically R12! had one since release. great product and even have my tv linked in via optical. output to either headphones or a pair of triangle aio twins and jamo sub. perfect for both music and films. the thx amps are fine and i have no problems with sibilance, then again, i use an external power supply. not the one by FiiO as thats over priced. a good quality power supply by any other brand, outputting 12v & +3A, is fine. \nthis works as a great pre-amp/streamer should you not 100% like the inbuilt amp sound. going to a tube amp really is nice.\nthere is a remote control available for this, if you find phone+FiiO app a pain.launch

I have one of these for desktop use and I love it. I stream music directly from it via xlr out and connect a subwoofer via using one set of the two rca outputs. The xlr and rca are both active. In the video i noticed it was presented as if a subwoofer is not an option. In fact, you can hook up two subwoofers to this thing if you use the xlr out to your amp/active speakers since there are two sets of rca out. I haven't tried this, but you might be able to even use a sub or two with headphone listening. Pretty sure the node has sub integration and crossover settings built in which the r7 does not but i didn't have an issue integrating using the dials on the back of my powered sub.launch

The R7 is getting good reviews. I consider it a game changer for desktop use. And I too hope it fuels competition. I am going to wait till any hiccups in the software have been worked out. However, I do not plan to use it with powered 'active' speakers. And only at night with headphones. While I value its streaming capability, I most value it as a very high quality DAC/Pre-Amp. I plan to use its XLR outs* run into the new Schiit Gjallahorn Amplifier, which at just ten watts sacrifices wattage for a focus on fidelity. To drive my Omega Super 3i single driver bookshelves; 94.5 db sensitivity @ 8 ohms. Electrostatic speed and awesome imaging with no crossover. At the desktop, there's no worry about beaming. I'll supplement the Super 3i speaker's small 4.5\" driver with my Quad LF-66 subwoofer, which has dual opposed 6\" drivers. Take that KEF and SVS! You're wayyy late to the party ;-) Sadly its been discontinued but happily I got it new, half off. No surprise that it sounds great with desktop use, Quad makes top notch gear. * Emotiva Audio sells a really good XLR to RCA adapter for a pittance.launch

Great video as always John. I've had my R7 for a while now. For the home office, I love it. The screen really does make this device. I'm happy with the sound it produces via my current speakers (Logitech z623) I think I will get a power amp and bookshelf speakers (while I just wanted a 'cheap' system for the office, but hey. Us audiophiles lol) \n\nI use mine 100% for Roon and not needing to need my phone to change tracks (or install Roon remote on my work PC) is the real winner. I just couldn't 'love' the Node X. I wanted to. \n\nNot having a HDMI port doesn't bother me as I have a system for the home theatre. But you can connect an external USB screen. I doubt I'll do that as I have no room left on my desk. But a cool feature.\n\nLooking forward to part 2 of this.launch

I've owned this device for 2 weeks now, pairing it with a Focal Clear MG and using Roon for the most part. I love the SQ, even on the 220V input it sounds amazing. The only real downside is the interface. You don't really want to change things constantly in terms of installing apps and going into settings, because for me it feels like I need to pick it up like any Android Phone. Which of course isn't the idea, meaning you have to get close to the screen, facing it directly. For me that means getting off my couch and on my knees, even though the R7 is right next to me. Another issue is the Airplay input. Streaming from my Apple TV to the R7, I get 'hicks and clicks'. If I install another Airplay receiver app, this doesn't happen, but in both cases video and audio get out of sync (even if there's a 'delay' setting in milliseconds). Hopefully that issue will be resolved.launch

I've owned FiiO R7 a while now. One thing I learnt was it sounds very thin and unimpressive if you use its standard 3 pin power plug, sounds like there's lots of noise going on inside. When I connected an IFI 12V power supply it improved the sound quite a bit. It also sounds different depending how you're using it, what app you're using to play music, I think USB Audio Player Pro sounds better running Tidal than the stock Tidal app. Keep in mind though FiiO rate the external power supply at 12v - 3A, the IFI is only about 1.8A, but its fine for IEMs and less demanding gear. FiiO released the linear power supply option for a reason, because with so much going on inside, its an electrical noisy device.launch

Just saw the FIIO R7 review! I love it so much I own 3 of them. I listen to music with an 1.5 TB SD card, stream individual radio stations, a few different streaming services. I listen mostly through my 2 stereos system via RCA’s in each of my two houses. I also have one in one bedroom. I also listen through headphones wired and bluetooth. I have had few issues and the music always sounds pretty good pretty good to me. As good or better than a CD. I also listen to hi rez downloads. It never lets me down. It is a bit of a learning curve to set up the system to your individual settings. Once you do that. It will never let you down. it offers at this price point an excellent all in one box!launch

I think this can be compared to the Korean manufactured Astell & Kern ACRO CA1000 or CA1000T (tube amp hybrid), I currently own the CA1000 which can output Balanced 15Vrms max which comes with 3.5mm, 6.35mm (1ohm) / 2.5mm, 4.4mm (2ohm), RCA (2ohm) outputs. wish this thing had a XLR balanced out put as well. It also uses the similar ES9068AS quad dac, so mine should sound similar to the one in the FIIO R7 with ES9068A. I would want to see more all in one products or modular products like this in the future. I am so tempted that this one only costs 699USD as opposed to the A&K ACRO series over $2000USD. I was wondering how is the fit and finish on the FiiO. THanks.launch
