My main condenser mic! I also have a neat worker bee 2 interesting you think they have similar sound structures. The 4040 on my voice sounds more open and clear, where as the worker bee 2 gives me a grittier sound. Still clear but rough around the edges.

My college was the first time I actually used microphones through its radio and television programs. The TV side, which is what I was in, had Blue Yeti mics, so that was the first microphone experience I had. When I got one too I liked it until I found the AT2020 which I fell in love instantly. Eventually I got up to the AT4040 and fell in love instantly once again. I got the Shure SM7B almost a year ago, because everyone in the world was talking about how amazing it is, but switched back to the AT4040 again recently because this captures my voice a lot better, and is overall a better experience for me

Omg not gonna lie the difference between most of the mics here are pretty subtle... but my favorite one here must be the at 4040 as it sounded smoothest in my ears. But honestly any of the microphone u get is good but for the at 2020 self noise just get the Denoiser pluggin and it will reduce bg noise. Nice video!

I liked the AT4033 the most on your voice. To me that one sounds the most balanced. Nice warmth, subtle lower-mid boost and transparent highs, but not silky like the other 3.\n\nI use a pair of AT4040 as overhead mics, which give me a nice and open sound. The cymbals cut nice through the mix, but because of the large diaphragm, the kit as a whole comes through as well.\n\nAudio Technica sure makes great audio gear.

Self noise, diaphragm size, and shock mount are big differences between the AT2020 and AT2035. 20 db SPL on the 2020 is a much higher noise level compared to just 12 db SPL on the 2035 which mics that cost hundreds of dollars more seem to aim for or lower. Julian Krause for examples recommends to go for 15 or lower noise. \n\nThe diaphragm is about 50% larger on the 2035 which lets you capture more detail and nuance in recordings. Haven't tested this out yet as my 2035 is on it's way but my previous mic was a 50th Anniversary Edition AT4033A and I also had an SM58 dynamic mic. The difference between the 4033A and SM58 was big in capturing the character in my voice. The 4033A won every time so it was best used for main vocals. The SM58 was great for background vocals though.\n\nThe shock mount is important because it's $30 if you buy it separately (there's also a custom Audio-Technica metal pop filter that goes with it but it seems to only be sold in Asia which is unfortunate because it's such a nice filter with the logo on the front of it. $30 shipping for a $50 filter is a bit much though). Having a shock mount helps even more with extra noise you might get from vibrations in the floor, from the mic stand, and/or vibrations caused by a train or truck passing by (know from experience).

The AT2020 and AT2035 have a smaller diaphragm capsule. It's approximately 22mm, as opposed to the 34mm in the AT4040 and AT4033. I find that my AT2035 tends to be better suited to raucous rock vocals than microphones (I've tried a few) having the larger capsule.

Hey Edward Thank u so much for your informative and valuable videos, i have only one confusing question, i own at4040 connected to focusrite 2i2 1gen and my room is well treated, when singing the low and the low mid are so much high to the point its difficult to correct it without loosing so much quality, i tried everything standing 6 8 10\" even 1 feet from the mic it still picks the low and the mid low at a very high level, what can i do?

I was thinking about getting one of these (used though) but I opted for the 3U Audio Black CM1 instead because I know U87 style mics work well on my voice. I do think the AT4040 sounds nice, but I think it picks up sibilance a bit too much (like you said). You could really hear those breaths you took clearly and it picks up that hissing s sound pretty clearly. Obviously these aren't a big issue because you can edit out breaths and use a de-esser. Other than that problem it's a very nice microphone.

Great video. I find that I almost always have to cut about 3.5db from 2.5k on the AT4040 using an SSL channel strip to get rid of the harshness of the high mids. Sounds great though after doing that.

The microphone has a phenomenal tone to it at the expense of a very forgiving polar pattern and high sensitivity. Not suitable for gamers and let's players imo unless they have extensive acoustic treatment in their rooms.\nAs always, great review Bandrew!

Your guitar wouldn't have sounded that good with an SM57. Ugh. I don't use it on guitar cabs anymore, there's too many better options -- Like a Blue Spark, Sennheiser 441 or e609, or believe it or not, an ElectroVoice Cobalt C04. Audio Technica really improved the shock mount -- you should see the useless one that came with MY AT4040! Complete junk. It's actually holding the mic with a big rubber band -- that's it! I ended up using the mount that came with my AKG C4000B. Far better.
