I'm researching recorders right now and to me, this seems like a sleeper. Per search, this uses the F series mic preamps - same as much costlier recorders. If I was to buy this strictly for recording XLR microphones attached (i.e. NT1) the F series pre-amp and 32 bit float, for the current cost is an insanely good deal. Am I missing something?

M2 only has 3.5mm output jack, no input jack. Actually that is something I like - it is optimized end to end for best results. Zoom know exactly what the characteristics of the input device are. It's always just their own mic capsules. So the preamp and ADCs are designed to make the best of it. That helps them achieve a max input level of 135dB - which is about as high as any device goes. \n\nI think the M4 is intended for a different range of uses compared to the M2. Because of its unusual design and also because of the bad reviews when the defective first release came out, it has been rather overlooked. But it does use dual ADCs, its preamps are related to the very reputable Zoom F series of devices, and if the built in mics are as good those on the M2 (which in my tests against a range of other devices performed very well) it does deserve serious consideration. Some time back..I almost tested them all. My all-time favorite was the Olympus ls100 but the zoom M4 has even better pre amps this is incredible. The sound quality is insane.

I have to say that those who have reported purchase of the M4 (and in general the M2 & M3) seem to be very happy with these devices, which makes them a very worthwhile bargain at the moment, unless the form factor just wouldn't work for you. \n\nAs for mic suspensions, I think the problem with all such devices is that as the capsules weigh hardly anything, and therefore they have no inertia, a functioning suspension between the capsule and the body would have to be incredibly flexible and probably therefore not very robust. I don't recall any hand held recorder being famous for its low handling noise, although some get complained about more than others - low end devices possibly being used by people not used to simply having to keep their hand immobile relative to the device. The shiny surface on the M series devices was intended to reduce handling noise by being slippery, but of course then you have to be careful not to drop it....\n\nAnyway I look forward to your next video!

I use Logic Pro for stem separation of one-take recordings of voice, guitar, percussion, and keyboards. Great for quick high quality demos using minimal equipment. Thank you for the video. I just got mine (they are so cheap now) and I have a question I hope you can help with: When I shake the recorder a bit I think I can hear the mics move and make a little sound where they are screwed on. Does yours do that? I opened it up and checked if I can fasten the screws a bit more but they are already tight. Any idea if this can be fixed? Thank you.
