100% agree. The Zoom F3 was a complete game-changer for me. I used to use a small Tascam DR-10 to record the mic feed from events, and often I'd have to plug it into the XLR at the back of one of the speakers. More often than not, I'd end up with massively peaking audio that was totally distorted and unusable--even if I selected the \"dual recording\" function which gave me a parallel recording with a smaller signal. \n\nNow, when I plug in my Zoom F3, it doesn't even matter. I can import the recorded file into Audition and get perfect levels every time. Mind blown.launch

Thanks for the video!\nOrdered the F3 ~ one week ago and this little thing does everything I wanted:\nsmall/moderately light for mounting it on the camera, sound with a M5 matched pair is very good.\nNow I can do what I always wanted: ORTF microphone config on a video camera without large recorder or clumsy phantom power supply + the \"32-bit safety\".\nYour video confirms the good audio quality (should have checked your measurements/comments before but went right this time ;-). Audio isn't that loud with an 80 Ohm headphone (32 would be better) but with 32-bit a headphone isn't no longer that important if you just want to record high quality ambience sound.\nBy the way: was also interested in the Tascam hot shoe XLR adapter but this thing is large, costs 2x the money. Plus F3 can be used for 2 additional channels (2x wireless lavalier + 2x ambience) or as safety recording at least for audio for two channels after feeding the line out into the camera.launch

the Zoom F3 looks really interesting for recording and booming at the same time, when it's not always possible to perform boom acrobatics and perfect mic placement whilst also riding a gain control - a situation I've been in on many low budget indie shoots! 32bit float is a good advantage in this situation too. Here's my experience when connecting audio to the main sound system or DJ:\n1. Some DJs are douchebags and will max the audio leaving you with useless audio\n2. Someone will go to an unmanned audio system and play around the knobs\n3. Douchebag guests moves the dial on a Zoom H6\n4. Some DJs disconnect or do not want any connection to their system\n\nSo:\n\n-32 bit float helps when the DJ cranks up the audio\n-Always, always, always have a backup\n-Never rely on the main audio system for audio, mic up people as much as you can\n\nWith the Zoom F3, you can hide it in a case and just leave the cable out, you also wont have to worry about audio peaking.\nYou can connect it to a powerbank.\n\nGreat video, thanks Matt!launch

The Zoom F3 is a beast. I was on location and my F3 fell out of my car and landed in the snow. It was not found for another 6 weeks. It went though 6 weeks of everything from temps that had snow thawing and also -40c. When it was found I had them take the batteries out, put in a bag of rice for a couple of weeks and it still works perfect!launch

The Zoom F3 really is fantastic! Such quality in a compact form factor is very hard to beat. Check out the Mount Plate SmallRig makes; it allows you to screw it on to just about anything without the strap bars getting in the way, and has almost no effect on the size/footprint.\n\nAlso worth checking out is the Zoom M4. Same preamps for the XLR's, gives you back the XY mics and *combo* jacks if you need, and only $200. Odd shape and more \"Zoom plastic,\" but otherwise solid. Makes it even harder to justify an H5studio.launch

Great video, Sir. Got my F3 today and I am very impressed. Walking around town today with my BP4025 large diaphragm Stereo mic. Beautiful. Low level BG atmoses and slamming doors at 15cm! All lovely. Great portable tool for us Soundphiles. (I have a Portacapture and several Sound Devices as well, but the toys we get to play with today are so much more versatile than those of only ten years ago. )launch

Thanks for the review! I've been waiting for this. For weddings, this is perfect. I have been attaching my Zoom H5 to a board at reception halls and even some churches. But I find that the MC is often louder when its show time than they were during sound check. I had my ways to mitigate that with the H5 but the F3 will make thst easier. And after some introspection, I realize I never really use the XY mics. Only their 3.5mm jack. Outside of weddings I do corporate and indistrial work photo and video and this will be beautiful for the one man operator that I am. Can't wait to give it its first run.launch

I know traditionally people like to stick to -12 to -6 decibels, but I often find myself just trying to find what 'sounds good', while trying to imagine what the waveform will look like. Several users power the F3 almost exclusively from portable power banks for hours of unattended recording without static or issues, keeping batteries only as backup. This is valued for long field sessions like nature or documentary shoots.

Lovely review! The USB-C power works with portable power banks banks, too. I’ve powered my F3 this way almost exclusively; no static issues. I keep a set of batteries installed solely as a backup in case my power bank ever depletes in the middle of recording.\n\nI’ve had the power bank method work with older Zooms too for what it’s worth (H5, H6). Lasts for hours upon hours.launch

I've been using the F3 as a remote recorder. I have 2 Rode M5s on a stand plugged into the F3. Then plug in an audio splitter into the F3 output. Each split, is plugged into a Rode Go II transmitter. On the camera, the Rode Go II receiver is plugged into the Mic port which then gets the left/right audio track. On the stand with the 2 mics and the F3 and Rode Go II transmitters, I have a sony NPF battery plate (smallrig) which provides additional power to each device via USB-C. I put the whole recording rig on smallrig rails and attach it to the base of the mic stand. The mic stand can then be placed anywhere and there there are no wires to contend with. Once set up, I start the recording on the F3 and match it up later.launch

Hey Curtis! Your reviews are always very informative my hat is off to you for a job well done! This has been the device I have been waiting quite some time for. A small affordable 32 bit float recorder that can run for hours on an auxiliary power source. My use case scenario is for ambient nature recordings. It will be installed in a small Pelican case strapped to the base of a tree with two small em272 mics attached further up the tree. It will be left there over night to capture any night time sounds. Owners comparing it to more expensive gear like Sound Devices units say the F3 'smokes' pricier recorders and delivers beautiful, detailed audio even with high-end stereo mics. One long-term user found it well-suited even for niche scientific applications.

I've been using the F3 for about a year now, and it performs very well for my particular applicaton - which is recording bat ultrasound. I understand it's not designed for that task, but the ultrasonic bandwidth up to around 75KHz is in fact pretty respectable! \nOne thing you don't mention in your review is the peak input level for the line input (which is +24dBu). \n As you describe, the +4dBu max input level for the mic input can be a bit low. I prefer to use the line input setting, so that the microphone itself is the peak analogue audio limiting feature, and not the recorder. \nSome bat ultrasound echolocation calls can exceed 130dB (when nearby!) and are utterly unpredictable. Setting the input to the line setting allows for signals up to +24dBu (over 34vp-p!) to be recorded before the recorder electronics clip. \nI suspect the line input is smply an analogue 'pad', and the noise floor is a little compromised in that mode, but it works well for my application. The adjustable monitor levels allow for real time monitoring via an attached heterodyne detector, which is useful. They do need to be set quite high, when monitoring a line input!\nA rather 'niche' application of course, but I find the F3 performs better than I had expected, as is a LOT less expensive than alternative specialised equipment currently available for this type of task.launch

Another great video - you're so good at this. I have the F6 and sing its praises every chance I get. As an audio engineer with possibly more years of experience than you've been on the planet, I can say that nothing has changed audio recording like 32-bit float. I might take issue with your assertion that this is a 'beginner model' recorder. This thing smokes many much more expensive 'pro' recorders I've used. The only real shortcoming would possibly be the preamps, and that lack of combi-jacks. But none of that is said to take away from your overview. Keep up the great work.\nOH... and you can use those 'feet' to hang this on your belt. I use a stiff tactical belt. No more audio bag needed: run one channel to your boom, slap a Hollyland receiver in channel two for lav backup audio, done dealio.launch
