Sound clarity falls short of the Rode VideoMicro in most comparisons. Across many side-by-side tests, reviewers described the D30 as muddy, muffled, boxy or lacking clarity compared to the Rode VideoMicro, which was repeatedly called crisper and fuller-sounding both indoors and outdoors. Several attributed the murkiness to comb filtering or phase issues from the mic's longer interference tube, and one commenter noted missing high frequencies and an overly dark tone. Even fans of Synco's other shotgun mics, like the D1 or D2, said the D30 didn't quite live up to expectations, with one reviewer returning it in favor of a USB microphone due to excessive room reverb.

It picks up a lot of room ambience, echo and background noise. Multiple listeners noted the super-cardioid D30 is very sensitive to room tone, echo and reverb, sometimes sounding like it favors street or traffic noise over the speaker's voice. One commenter with an audio background suggested lowering gain and using a noise gate plus light compression in post, while another pointed out that off-axis positioning can worsen the roomy, back-wall-bounce sound. Wind rejection outdoors also disappointed some, with the furry windscreen performing poorly despite doing better indoors.

The bundled S6M lavalier mic is the standout, and the price is a draw. Several reviewers were surprised the included S6M lav mic sounded as good as or better than the pricier Sennheiser ME2, calling it a steal at around $23-25 and praising its long cable. The D30's gain-adjustment knob and low-cut filter were seen as promising budget-friendly features, and a couple of users preferred its extra bass and indoor studio performance over the Rode, even though outdoor results were more mixed.
