IMHO Sony are really poor at communications with their customers whereas Rode on the other hand are first class on problem solving and compatibility explanations. It's really interesting hearing so many reviews talking about how this mic has a horrible noise. It's so hard to believe that Sony, the creator of one of the best mics in music/recording history, just slapped their name on a trash mic. White noise is literally all over the place with Sony mics. I tried a few of them, and it's always about the sound quality. I love the setup with no cables, but their quality is complete crap. This is why probably nobody heard about them, not just the name.launch

Multiple users report 'accessory not supported' errors when trying to use the digital hotshoe connection on the ZV-1 and A7III, forcing a fallback to analog cable mode, which contradicts official marketing.

I am using the ECM-W2BT with a Sony A7R4 (Just like the one in this video). The selection for Analogue on the receiver works fine using the external cable, but the digital selection is not working at all. Using analogue sounds pretty good leaving the attenuation at zero, and then adjusting the internal level in the camera's menu setting to 10 instead of the hotter default level. As it stands, digital with no wire doesn't work at all using the transmitter mic, mix, or receiver mic. All works fine in Analogue, but not Digital. What could I be doing wrong?launch

There is so much hissing self noise in every review i've watched, even in this one, Sony's own video. Can you fix this in a firmware update or something? Also att -20 is too loud for most Sony cameras but we cant change the audio level when this is connectedlaunch

Guys, just FYI since Sony's website is a bit cloudy about compatibility. You do NOT need any cable even on a A7III with this audio setup. Just flick to analog and you are good to go. The analog signal travels through the MI shoe. So yeah, no messy cables! Just tested by me, obviously. Sorry if the Sony website is actually clear :D \nThanks for the review, i love the unit too but i wish you could still control the levels in camera. I wonder if this is a software fix. Did you have any trouble recording with those preset attenuations only?launch

Question for you? On all the Sony cameras I've tested any microphone sending a signal through the hotshoe turns on AGC (Automatic Gain Control) and can't be turned off. So there's no way to manually control your sound levels and you always end up with some distortion at some point. It doesn't matter whether it's something like the ZV-1 or the A7 series, they all seem to do this. Can you confirm if this is the case on the ECM-W2BT?launch

Unlike competing wireless mic systems, the ECM-W2BT lacks internal/backup recording, meaning a lost wireless connection can ruin the audio entirely with no fallback.

Your dead cat test is bullshit. The first iteration of the wireless go had an issue with that, but the wireless go II is rock steady. But if you even don't know that you have to turn it, in order to secure it, that's really weak for somebody who wants to give advice to other people. No word on backup recording into the Rode wireless go, which is a killer feature when there is a problem with the wireless connection, virtually rendering your video recording useless. All new wireless microphone sets and every modern wireless mic set has that feature now, but not the Sony.launch

The on-camera receiver doesn't automatically turn on/off with the camera, and in some cases needs independent charging even in digital hotshoe mode, requiring extra attention from the user.

There's a reason we haven't heard from it. The audio quality is not good! Most importantly, simple design features like having the on-camera receiver turn on and off automatically when the camera is turned on and off or goes to sleep is a serious omission. You still have to pay attention to the receiver separately from the camera, that completely makes the hotshoe benefits limited. I can't believe Sony designers and engineers are so shortsighted!launch

Thanks for the preview, as a Sony user I'm interested in these hot shoe connection mics that Sony is making. Bit disappointing that it cut out so bad when line of sight broken at only 50m or so. Also would be good to see a size comparison with the Rode wireless go and other competitors.launch
