The Neumann BCM705 can sound insanely good — but you really have to find the right setup for it.\n\nWhen it is dialed in properly, this microphone gives you a sound that I honestly do not hear from many streamers: warm, creamy, radio-like, very close, very full, but still not exhausting to listen to. It has this slightly nostalgic radio vibe, almost a bit of a 90s touch, but modern and clean. The voice does not just sound loud or clear — it gets character.\n\nFor me, the BCM705 works best at around 5 cm distance from the microphone. Not too far away. At that close distance, it really starts to show its true power: body, warmth, directness, and that strong broadcast sound. If you move too far away, it may sound a bit more natural, but you lose that special close-mic character.\n\nBut here is the important part: at 5 cm, you also have to tame the microphone a little. Otherwise, it can get too thick in the low end or too muddy in the low mids. The sound should stay open, but not sharp.\n\nFG-116 Modern:\nRatio: 4:1\nAttack: 3\nRelease: 5\nCircuit: 2\nHP Sidechain: on\nMix: 100%\n\nThe FG-116 is more like glue and a peak catcher, not the main compressor. It sounds like a host, like radio, like a signature sound.\n\nMy sweet spot:\n5 cm distance, internal pop filter stays in, tame 180/320 Hz, keep the Air subtle, use controlled compression, and use Loudmax only as protection.\n\nOnce you really find the BCM705, it can sound incredible. The BCM 705 is honestly an insanely strong microphone. You can get a really amazing sound out of it — but in my opinion, you really have to speak close to it. Around 5 cm is the sweet spot for me. That’s where the full, direct radio character really comes out.\n\nOnce it’s set up properly, it’s absolutely usable for streaming. The sound is just extremely good: creamy, direct, high-quality, with a slight 80s radio/podcast vibe. Not sterile, but with real character and a bit of edge.\n\nMy current chain through Wave XLR / Wave Link:\n\nWave Link High-Pass Filter\n→ VMR Gate: Classic\n→ FG-73 at around 25 dB for a subtle preamp/radio touch\n→ FG-116 Modern as the main compressor, Circuit 2, HP Sidechain on, Attack 5, Release 7, Mix 80%\n→ SD-3A in Compress mode for that creamy glue\n→ AIR EQ AIR at +0.5 dB for that open, polished touch\n→ LoudMax at the end with the ceiling set to -2 dB as the final limiter\n\nNo heavy EQ, no denoiser, no artificial over-processing. The mic already sounds great on its own — the chain just enhances it. For close-mic use and streaming, I think the BCM 705 is absolutely amazing.

I have to constantly post process my RØDE Procaster to especially get rid off the excess of 2.7kHz in the frequency response. I mention this, because the 705 has a very clean, smooth sound to it and every microphone you compared it to, had some short comings. I cannot help but notice, the Neumann BCM 705 has a great intelligibility out of the box. Listen to the microphones at a low volume and you will notice. Also, the BCM 705 seemingly doesn't need any post processing to sound decent, at least for your voice. The Behringer XM8500 sounds wholly, because the mid and upper mid frequencies are just anemic. And post processing shows why, because the y sound brittle, if you try to increase them. The CAD Audio A77Bk had apparently a excess at 2.4khz to 2.8Khz, which feels similar to the RØDE Procaster of mine. The SE Electronics Dynacaster is even worse than the XM8500, sounding outright boomy at first with an excess at 200 Hz and on the second part with some ringing around 1.5Khz and 2Khz. Did you actually keep the distance stable when recording that one? I can't help but wonder, because usually, sound would not change like that. The Aston Stealth again has a 500-600 Hz excess, which makes your voice sound tinny in a different way.\n\nYea, Neumann microphones are expensive, but just talking about a Neumann Tax here is just shows, that you are not the target audience for a microphone like that. Especially, since Neumann is not the only company with microphones at that price range and above. Examples? AKG, Lewitt, Earthworks, Telefunken. I am sorry to put it this bluntly. I admit freely tho, that I had difficulties in hearing those differences myself for the longest time. Also - you have a point in mentioning, that the BCM 705 needs stellar microphone technique and as such is not a microphone for beginners at all. I would even argue, that the Neumann BCM 104 would be a better choice for many people, with a cardioid pickup pattern instead of the hyper cardioid of the Neumann BCM 705.
