The hard sync and filter are the Prodigy's signature strengths. Multiple owners single out the Prodigy's oscillator hard sync as among the best they've heard, describing screaming leads with an overdriven, soft-clipped fattening effect. The filter is often called rawer, wilder, and more 'banshee-ish' than other Moog filters, edging toward MS-20 territory. Several note the pitch wheel's special sync-mode behavior (affecting only oscillator 2) as a clever, underused feature many demo videos miss entirely.

Reliability and repairability decline with age. As an early, cost-reduced Moog built without Robert Moog's direct involvement, the Prodigy is known for aging scale-voltage control chips that fail and require rare, expensive NOS parts. Owners report long tuning times, oscillators failing outright, and pots that lose calibration if disturbed. Despite this, many keep using partially-broken units, and one owner still finds it 'rock solid' once warmed up and tuned.

Lack of MIDI and minimal features push owners toward mods. Original units have no MIDI, only CV/Gate on post-1981 MkII models, and finding a technician willing to add MIDI is described as tricky. Owners have added filter FM from oscillator 2, custom CV/gate/MIDI interfaces, and LFO/envelope mods to expand its capability.
