Overall Impression

Players say the XK-3c delivers surprisingly authentic Hammond tone. One long-time gigging musician ran an XK-3-c with a lower manual and a B3 Guys wood stand through a vintage Leslie and found it thoroughly convincing, calling new digital Hammonds a natural progression of the classic organ rather than a mere clone. Another player, after extensive live testing, judged the XK-3c's sound better than an SK Pro, a sold-off SK2, and even the newer XK4, praising its tone highly enough to still seek a matching XKL3 lower manual.

It's more organ than many players will ever fully use. An owner of both an XK3C and a 2101 said that while the newer XK5 offers extra punch, they see no need to upgrade because the XK3C already provides more capability than they require after eleven years of playing at a beginner level. For practice sessions and occasional recording, they still reach for a light, portable keyboard instead, suggesting the XK-3C's organ features go well beyond casual needs.

The keybed and portability still draw some complaints. One former owner liked how the XK-3-c sounded through a simulated Leslie but found it too heavy to comfortably haul to gigs and disliked its key feel, describing the action as too stiff after growing up playing lighter synthesizer keyboards. Separately, another player found genuine XKL3 lower manuals nearly impossible to source secondhand in the Netherlands, complicating plans for a full two-manual XK-3c console setup.

I was a keyboard tech for 36 years in the bible belt where I serviced hundreds of Hammond organs. What most organists are un aware of is that the majority of tonewheel Hammonds do not sound like they did when they were new. There are capacitors on the tone generators that become leaky and make the tone very dull. The bussbars and key switch contact have become oxidized and the have a ton of noisy key click and dead or intermittent notes. The ones that still have vacuum tube preamps still have the original tubes and leaky filter capacitors in the poser supply. On the few occasions when a church could afford the total rebuild of these organs that restores them to their original tone, many of the organists hated that new clean clear bright tone. The output of the mechanical tone generators should be a clean pure undistorted sinewave. The new Hammonds have a digital tone generator board that produces that same output that the original new mechanical tonewheel generators used to produce. So if a player is used to that old dirty tonewheel tone, of course they will complain about the new organs.

Been playing NEW Hammonds since the mid 60ies. And, this is why you can NEVER call any of the digital Hammonds a 'clone'. They are Hammonds, and as I have commented over the years on other youTube channels, the president of Hammond USA said a long time ago, these new organs are a \"NATURAL PROGRESSION of the Hammond Organ\". \n\nPlaying in a pro blues band, I had the XK-3-c / lower manual / B3 Guys B3 wood stand. A full sized portable console on stage through a vintage Pro 330 Leslie. Later, I downsized to what I still play today. SK-2 with a Studio 12 Leslie. I have the crosstalk and leakage CRANKED with a bit of bi-directional key click, and it is heavenly !\n\nOne comment for you Andy, adding the chorus vibrato adds a little more upper frequency response. I could here the 'leakage' a bit stronger on the XK-5 vs. vintage and that was the only difference I could pick out. All you would have to do is dial the Leakage or Crosstalk back a bit more to match. But then again, the NEW Hammonds are TOTALLY variable, right down to setting the distances of the pickup coil on each generator wheel as in the original. Great DEMO ! 👍

Hi Nick here i'm again, I am one of your hundreds followers and even if I am not a great Hammond player I always loved the sound of it and Deep Purple is my musical addition. I am getting an XK3c (After plenty of live tests, I have noticed that this is still a very valid Organ and it's sound is better than my SK Pro, than my SK2 that I just sold and even better than XK4), while getting the XK3c is still relatively easy, but finding the XKL3 lower manual anywhere here in the Netherlands is literarily mission impossible! Perhaps I could find one there in the UK since I am over there every 6 months? What would be the best place where to find a second hand stuff (Organ Keyboard) or if you can help me to actually find the XKL3 manual there in the UK? Perhaps I have to pay import tax now, but maybe if I go there to meet my ex wife to see my children, I can get one without paying customs duty! I usually go with my SUV which is large and I can fit big stuff inside. I am going next end of May and will have a jam session with my friends there in London so I could take the opportunity to find the XKl3. I have no idea why I can't get one here is rare gear here.

As the owner of an XK3C and 2101, I can appreciate the extra punch the XK5 has but I don’t see an upgrade in my future. At my level which is still beginner after 11 years, the 3C is more than I’ll ever need. When I have played out - practice and a few recording sessions I bring my 15lb Roland VR09. I saw a vintage B3 in my future 10 years ago, but today if somebody showed up at my door with a free one I’d have to turn it down, no place to put it.

The original Hammond sounds so much better but I would never own one because I can't haul it around, no room for it, and maintenance. I did have the XK3-C but even that was pretty heavy to haul around and I personally did not like the feel of the keys, too stiff for me but I grew up playing synthesizers with light action. I thought the XK3-C sounded good with the fake leslie.
