Several commenters bought the Nest Hub Max specifically for home monitoring, setting it up in the Nest app to record activity while away and get alerts, with one noting it recognizes them and shows a personalized avatar. Duo video calling is described as pretty good by another user. However, at least one owner reports the camera-monitoring function stopped working after months of otherwise normal use, and a Duo group-calling bug is called a scam-level flaw for a device marketed on that feature.

Streaming support is a major sore point for reviewers. Multiple commenters are frustrated that asking for a song or video often plays the wrong result, such as requesting Billie Eilish or Bob Marley and getting something entirely different. Bigger still is the lack of proper Netflix and YouTube support despite Chromecast being built in, plus no ability to search YouTube by text, no Apple Music or Amazon Music integration, and no way to install other streaming apps, pushing some potential buyers to walk away before purchasing.
