Yeah right out the box it’s not impressive, thought about returning it within a couple of hours listening to it. Then I saw one of your videos talking about that Reddit post about EQing it, and that made a day and night difference. If you get your hands on one I’d love to see a review, but give it another chance after EQing it or once Fiio updates it. Also I never ran into the volume issue but my unit froze all the time while streaming Roon, lots of issues until I plugged in the network cablelaunch

Didn’t have any of the issues you ran into with my K17 R2R. The only issue I’ve had with it is two instances (over the past few weeks) of it randomly rebooting on its own, but no random volume maxing out issues and the tonality and timbre is absolutely perfect. I’m using it as a DAC/preamp in a speaker setup. For me, it sounds better than Topping DX9 Discrete as well as Gustard R26 II as DAC/preamp in my speaker system (MoFi SourcePoint 8 standmounts with an SVS SB-3000 subwoofer).launch

Yes I have the k17 and it sounds famously and holographic paired with NAIM 5si amp and Dynaudio Emit 30 speakers….\n\nBUT that is where it all ends the FIIO support and under baked products they expect you put up with until they sort out the firmware is not acceptable… when first released I would state they are NOT fit for purpose Prototype. It leaves a bitter taste in my mouth \n\nI have to say I will never buy another FIIO product again because of this … I am not their employee and shouldn’t have to spend hours sorting out the product... time to go back to the established brands like NAIM they just work out of the box and just enjoylaunch

Hi firstly I would like to say I really like your reviews very well rounded... I do have the K17 and the sound quality and performance is excellent running via NAIM amp . However NO talks about a bout Fiios App what a disgrace eg the control APP language is in Chinese VERY hard to change, in general Fiios products goto market half completed prototype, then maybe finish the development... lots of option out there FIIOlaunch

I bought the FiiO K17 R2R and was disappointed with its sound. I listen to everything through HiFiMAN Arya Organic.\r\n\r\nPersonally, the FiiO K17 R2R doesn’t sound like a classic R2R to me at all — its presentation reminds me more of a Delta-Sigma DAC. Compared to the HiFiMAN Serenade and Gustard R26II, the K17 R2R sounds more neutral-dry and flat to my ears, which is much more reminiscent of the Delta-Sigma sound I’m familiar with.\r\n\r\nIn my understanding, a good R2R DAC sounds smoother, with a more pronounced, forward-sounding vocal presentation and a better sense of depth.\r\n\r\nI also compared the FiiO K17 R2R directly with the FiiO K19, and I clearly preferred the K19. To my ears, the K19 sounds more even, more lively, and simply more enjoyable. Both have a fairly neutral presentation, but the K17 R2R sounds drier, sharper, and less spacious to me. I even preferred the FiiO K17 (AKM) over the K17 R2R.\r\n\r\nWhat do I mean by a flat sound without depth? To me, it means that the vocals don’t feel closer to the listener and aren’t sufficiently separated from the instruments — everything seems to exist on the same plane.\r\n\r\nWith the HiFiMAN Serenade and Gustard R26II, I perceive the soundstage differently: the vocals stand out more clearly against the instruments and feel somewhat closer to the listener, while the instruments are positioned deeper in the stage. The bass also sounds more spacious and has more weight and rumble. That sense of layering, distance between different elements, and multiple planes is what I mean by depth and layering.\r\n\r\nAs for PEQ, personally I find it to be an unnecessary toy. I experimented with PEQ several times but eventually gave up on it. I simply prefer the sound as it is, without having to EQ it. Besides, I couldn’t get the FiiO K17 R2R to achieve what I was looking for with EQ anyway — a more forward, full-bodied vocal presentation and deep, spacious bass.\r\n\r\nOf course, these are purely my personal impressions from listening with the HiFiMAN Arya Organic.launch

I listened to music, games, and movies through the FiiO K17 R2R and was extremely disappointed. For comparison, I used the FiiO K19 and the Gustard stack (R26II + H26 + U26).\r\n\r\nI should mention right away that the FiiO K17 R2R and the Gustard stack (R26II + H26 + U26) sound completely different. Despite the K17's R2R architecture, it doesn't sound like any other R2R device I've heard, such as the HiFiMAN Serenade and the Gustard R26II.\r\n\r\nThe Gustard has a spacious, deep, and full-bodied sound. The vocals sound large and natural, as if they are separate from the instruments and have their own space. The microdynamics and textures are well-represented, the bass has weight and foundation, and the overall presentation is expensive, mature, and engaging.\r\n\r\nIn comparison, the Gustard FiiO K17 R2R sounds neutral, flat, dry, and lacks emotion. The bass lacks mass and body, making the music lose its foundation and physicality. The midrange is slightly pushed forward, which makes the presentation less natural for me, and the high frequencies sound sharper. As a result, the sound lacks emotional engagement and does not inspire me to continue listening.\r\n\r\nThe biggest disappointment for me is that the K17 R2R doesn't sound at all like the R2R sound I'm used to hearing. My benchmarks are the HiFiMan Serenade and Gustard R26II, and compared to them, the K17 R2R does not create the feeling of saturation, depth, and analog naturalness that I expected from a device with an R2R architecture.\r\n\r\nIf you compare the FiiO K17 R2R directly with the Gustard R26II, the difference becomes obvious. Gustard sounds larger, deeper, and much more natural, while the K17 R2R sounds flat and dry. I also don't get the same sense of expensive sound that Gustard has.\r\n\r\nThe FiiO K19 also falls short of the Gustard R26II in terms of volume and richness, but unlike the K17 R2R, it gives the impression of a higher-end device. Its sound is more cohesive and balanced. The bass is expressive and impactful, adding a sense of body and physicality to the sound. The mid-range sounds smoother and more natural, while the high-range sounds more comfortable for long-term listening. This is why it is difficult for me to choose between the FiiO K19 and the Gustard R26II — both have a high level of sound quality, although they achieve it in different ways. For the same reason, the Gustard X26III quickly dropped out of my personal comparison, while the K17 R2R could not compete with either the Gustard R26II or the FiiO K19.\r\n\r\nFor me, the FiiO K17 R2R is a mid-range device that did not meet my expectations. If you want to experience the R2R experience offered by devices like the HiFiMAN Serenade or the Gustard R26II, I cannot recommend the K17 R2R.\r\n\r\nIf I had to choose between the FiiO K17 R2R and the FiiO K19, I would undoubtedly choose the K19. To my ears, this is a more balanced, natural, and mature-sounding device.launch

I ended up returning the K17 because I thought the topping stack sounded more natural and warm. It was kinda the exact oposite of what someone would expect.launch

I tried the K17 at A2A and liked the headphone out, it wasnt insane but I was enjoying it alot, its only when I tried the line outs with my Midgard when it sounded very dead and boring like ESS dacs despite the AKM chips that usually sound very dynamic. I love the design doe. My most fav source is Chord tt2 so thats my point of reference.launch

I have the K17, I love it as a headphone amp, It is more colored and softer than I expected but I still like it, as a DAC with an external amplifier and speakers(ZA3+JBL 530) I like it less so, In that use case it isn't as neutral/accurate as my clean sounding d6s and lacks the presence(air), detail and soundstage size and by a huge margin, and it doesn't render objects/instruments moving across in space accurately and gives three-blob vibes, K17 as DAC also sounds drastically different depending on output where it favors balanced/XLR output in terms of overall detail, those were my experiences with it as DAC, But I like it as a retro desktop headphone amplifier.launch

The K17 lacks native streaming apps and UPnP/DLNA support, meaning NAS library browsing requires Roon or AirPlay, which some call a major missed opportunity for a device marketed as a streamer.

11:13 Probably there is some merit to your argument that the streamer input sounded worse. I just learned that K17 isn't a proper streamer, as in it doesn't have native streaming apps, nor supports proxy protocols like UPnP/DLNA etc. It has just Roon Ready and Airplay, both clearly inferior options according to me since you still need PC for playback (i.e. decode PCM). What a missed opportunity.launch

So…was so about to buy the K17 as a one box replacement for my DAC + amp + streamer, then realised it doesn’t support DLNA/UPnP.\n\nSo it has Ethernet and can stream online services, but can’t directly browse/play a Synology NAS library without Roon or AirPlay? Thats a huge miss for anyone running a local collection. Amazing hardware, but for NAS users it’s not really a complete network streamer. Pretty frustrating omission.😢launch

I wanted to add that, i have a K17 and im looking to trade it in for a K15. \n\nWhile the technicalities and power of the K17 are superior, the EQ chip on the K17 can only and exclusively be accessed with the Windows Only software using the secondary USB-C port in the back. While the K15 is compatible with the new Fiio Control web app (OS Agnostic). So if you use Linux or Mac, or Dual Boot, or you simply dont want to be plugging-unplugging cables to play around the EQ settings, the K15 offers a better software suit. If you only want EQ as a set-it-and-forget-it, the K17 is the better product obviously.launch

I agree with your review. I've had it for 6 months and use it for music production. I love it for that neutral sound you call \"cold,\" but in production, the sound shouldn't be \"colored\". However, this devics has a major problem for music production. If connected to Windows and you use a DAW, it has a latency at the initial play (like he must wake up), which means you lose about half second of the initial sound/track (remain silent). In production and sound design, this is a major problem especially if you work with samples. It's a problem specific to the K17 because this doesn't happen when I'm using with same PC/USB port other DACs!. So music producer should carefully evaluate this issue unless it is resolved in the future with firmware updates.launch

Never again with FiiO, 2 x different (FiiO K9 AKM and K9 Pro ESS) devices died exactly after two years. No support in Europe, and FiiO support replied to send the units to China (which is a nightmare). Amazing devices, but a nightmare if something goes wrong and you need support.launch
