I was recently in the situation, trying to decide between the Casio GP-510 Hybrid and the Kawai CA901. In the end, it really comes down to personal preference. I preferred the action of the GP-510, and I also really liked the built-in samples, especially the C. Bechstein B 212 Concert (Berlin Grand) sound.\n\nI liked the CA901 as well. Its sound is a bit more full and resonant thanks to the soundboard system, but it also depends a lot on where the piano is placed, since that can noticeably affect the sound. The action on the CA901 felt good too, but the GP-510 reminded me a bit more of a grand piano overall. To me, the GP-510 leans more towards an acoustic-like playing experience, while the CA901 feels like a more modern all-rounder and a very comfortable digital piano. That’s ultimately why I chose the GP-510. I also really liked the “Scenes” feature and how the acoustics change depending on the lid position.\n\nIt’s also worth mentioning the repetition speed of the Casio GP-510. In my experience, it’s extremely fast and among the best I’ve tried in a digital or hybrid piano. There’s also a very impressive video on YouTube that demonstrates just how fast it is. In real playing, no one would ever play that fast, but it really shows what the action is capable of. Even many acoustic instruments, and of course all AvantGrands, would struggle to keep up at that extreme level.\n\nAlso, the Casio GP‑510 is perfect for VSTs too! You get the full dynamic range, and it plays really well with software like Pianoteq. With a good audio interface, you can even send the sound back into the piano via the line input and play it through the piano’s speakers without any issues. I haven’t tested how the Kawai CA901 performs with VSTs, since I couldn’t try that in the store.\n\nYou could argue that the GP-310/510 action isn’t a “true” hybrid action, since it doesn’t replicate all aspects of a real grand action, such as a full escapement mechanism.\nOne could even argue that the Yamaha AvantGrands don’t have fully “true” hybrid actions either, since activating the damper pedal doesn’t relieve the action from the additional downweight required to lift the dampers when a key is pressed.\n\nWhat is clear, though, is that the GP-510 has more mechanical complexity in its key action compared to the Kawai CA901. This is noticeable in the playing feel and gives the instrument a bit more character.\n\nI also tested the AvantGrand NU1XA, and even though it’s more expensive, I briefly considered buying it. Personally, however, I didn’t like the feel of the action. It was good, but it reminded me more of the upright piano at my teacher’s place, and I was looking for something that imitates a grand piano rather than an upright. The N3X AvantGrand was an absolute dream to play, but I simply don’t have the space for it, and it would have been too expensive. Before spending that much on a hybrid, I would much rather invest in a Kawai K500 Aures 2.
