I have somewhat conflicted feelings on modulation pedals as a whole. I’ve had a flanger, analog chorus, phaser, and now this. It seems to me that modulation effects can easily take over the sound, which can be cool, but then I find the sound often sounds very plain by contrast after you switch modulation off again.\n\nAnd since I assumed that vibrato pedals all sounded seasick, I never thought I’d even enjoy one when I first started playing guitar and playing with effects. But after I got rid of my board’s chorus pedal, I saw Josh’s video on this one and thought, for $30, why not give it a try?\n\nSomehow, despite all odds, this is my main modulation pedal now. I still don’t love really seasick sounds, but I often dial it in pretty subtly at its slowest speed and just enough depth to notice it, and it really adds some nice movement without being overwhelming. I don’t use it for every song, but if I wanted I could easily make it an always-on pedal this way almost like Madison Cunningham’s main sound, and I’d love it.\n\nAnother other cool thing it does when needed is let me crank up the speed to max-ish for a cool warbley lead tone (after drives) when certain song needs that particular vibe. (For reference, it’s can do something a bit like the sound of the lead guitars on Muse’s Knights of Cydonia without a whammy bar.)\n\nAnd my final trick is turning it into a chorus of sorts. I often run with two reverbs on my board, a subtle always-on before the vibrato and a longer-decay one afterwards. And a delayed/reverberated signal mixing some moments of the vibrato wave with other moments of the wave (including the neutral part of the wave) sort of becomes a subtle chorus (since chorus is basically vibrato with some degree of dry mix). It’s a really nice sound that’s pretty usable almost anytime.\n\nAnyway all that is to say that my early misconceptions of vibrato made me not want to try one sooner, but I’ve really grown to love this one. It’s a lot more versatile than I ever expected and comes at a nice price.
