I owned the wa 73 eq and currently own the SPX. The difference I notice is the transient response across the frequency spectrum that becomes very apparent when saturating the input pre amp and while using material source material with a pronounced low mid to low end presence. \n\nThe way the neve saturates emphasized and breaks the mids in a crunchier, fuller, more present manner. The warm compresses, slows the low mids and cuts out or really flattens, smudges the lows. \n\nThe mids, high mids and hi end of the neve is definitely more open and clinical, can be harsh, yet it can be address easier in post while retaining presence. The way it sits is with more width and clearer. The warm has a metallic ring and sting the the high end when boosted or it sounds simply duller, cloudy in that range without the boost. It also can sound too flat after correcting it. \n\nIt is all in the transient response for me, either clean or saturated, the eq and pre amp is simply way better on the neve. The warm can work on vocals or as a saturating unit in parallel on source material recorded on clean amp or from synths, in the box sounds. It has a cool, darker, nastier sound that can actually be desirable depending on how you intend to implement it. The neve sounds just right of the bat.

Sounds smoother than the wa73, there’s a sharpness to the warm I don’t like, I have the ha73 but I like the Neve 5211 much better. I just got the Neve Newton Channel in. I like the modern clean sound and the silk. You should try it.

Yes, the Neve is obviously (at least to my ears) the better sounding preamp; and, having had the experience of using actual Neve preamps in the past, my advice to those who are after the Neve “sound”…\nis to buy a Neve. \n\nThat doesn’t mean that the various lesser priced 1073 “clones” out there these days are terrible, though, because they’re not…\nWarm, Heritage Audio, Golden Age, (and on the higher end of the price scale, BAE and Vintek) all make good sounding (even great), solid, respectable preamps with a 1073 vibe.\n\nDo they sound “just like a Neve 1073”? \nWell, maybe, maybe not…it’s subjective, depending on the listener, and for that matter, you could do shootouts between several actual, real Neve 1073’s, in their various incarnations and versions over the years, and they could each sound different from each other (from a little to a lot), depending on age, condition, and particularly so if you’re including those that are pre AMS, those vintage original Neve 1073’s from the early to mid 70’s…\n\nHere’s the thing - which I think is pertinent enough to point out - the price of the Neve 1073SPX ($2095 new) is nearly THREE times as much as that of the Warm Audio WA73EQ, and well over twice as much as the Heritage Audio HA73EQ.\n\nAnd honestly, I would EXPECT the Neve to sound better (for the price, it SHOULD sound noticeably better than the WA73, right?)\n\nIf you have the budget that allows you to buy the Neve, then of course it would be the best way to go…\n\nThat doesn’t mean that the WA73 EQ still isn’t a solid and respectable choice if your budget is only $800 or so. \n\nIMHO, of course.
